DR. SUE, WHERE ARE YOU NOW?
A CHRONICLE OF A JOURNEY AROUND THE U.S.A.
ADVENTURE 1

"FIELD TRIP 2--Fairy Doors"

For our second field trip, Mary Angela and I went on a magical tour (so of course we took Penny).  About 30 minutes away is a city that is the home of a major university.  Some downtown establishments have very special doors--door for "fairies" to use.  The first fairy door was made by a dad who was reading fairy tales to his daughters when they asked him how fairies get in and out of  houses.  The dad made a fairy door for their house, and then, by request, for other homes and businesses.  If you find the website, there is a map.  Mary Ang and I got the map and went to find all the doors.

Here is Penny at the first door we found.  She was excited!

This was the next one we found.

Below is a look inside of a Fairy Store behind one of the doors

We found the next door at the Public Library.  Do you see the windows in the books on the shelf?  We looked in and saw the inside of the fairy house.  Of course the door and house were in the Fairy Tales section of the library!

One of the other doors we found had inside and outside doors.  There was a notebook to write messages to the fairies, so Penny left one from Penfield schools and her.

We went into a shop downtown and Penny met a new friend.  He's dressed in a jacket to clue you in to our whereabouts.

MY QUESTIONS

Question 1:  What city am I in?
Question 2: What is the major university located here?
Can you find the website for the fairy doors? (Hint:  since these doors are in the city, they have a "city" adjective in the website name)

    ON THE ROAD UPDATE

If you used my clues successfully, you know that I started my journey in New York City.  The bridge I walk towards is the Verrazano Bridge that connects Long Island and Staten Island.   The river I walk towards in the other direction is the Hudson River.  The tunnels are the Lincoln and the Holland tunnels and the second bridge is the George Washington Bridge, all of which connect New Jersey and New York states.  The answer to the Bonus Question:  this section of the Brooklyn borough in NYC is called Bay Ridge.

(Flag answers: A--4;  B--3; C--2; D--1)

If you want to map my travels, I left Bay Ridge and took the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the FDR Drive.  I crossed over to the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) and crossed the Tappen Zee Bridge north to I-86.  I stopped off home in Steuben county for trip preparations, and began the long phase of my trip on February 6th, heading west on I-86.

MY FIRST STOP AND "FIELD TRIPS"

My first stop and visit was with a dear friend, Mary Angela, from my high school days who lives near a major USA city (the new picture at the top of the page is the clue for this city).  In addition to catching up on news, we visited a museum and went on a special "door" hunt.

"Field Trip 1--The Museum"

Our first day we visited a museum which featured the history of ideas that changed the world, including motorized vehicles and planes.

This is a picture of the first car--the museum is named for the man who invented this car.

At the museum, Mary Angela and I found a diner that reminded us of our old high school "hang outs", so we sat and reminisced.

We decided to test out this "Overland" which was the precursor to the Jeep--my Liberty still has that "boxy" look!

Also at this museum is the bus that Rosa Parks was in when she refused to get out of her seat.  Below are pictures of the bus and me sitting in Rosa's very seat.  How courageous she was!  Do you know what Rosa did and how it changed history?

One of the exhibits focused on the development of the airplane.  This is a replica of the Wright brothers first airplane.

Someone who changed aviation history was Charles Lindbergh, the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean.  To keep the plane light, he only took 7 things on the plane with him: meat sandwiches; rubber raft; hunting knife; flares; string; flashlight; and, hacksaw blade.  I realized that I went through such a process also, deciding what to take in my Jeep with me for 10 weeks.  Although I didn't have to worry about weight, I certainly have limited space.

MY QUESTIONS

Question 1:  What major USA city am I near?
Question 2:  Who is the inventor of the first car and the namesake of this museum?
Question 3:  If you were going on a ten week tour of the USA, what 7 things would you want to take with you and why?  (I'll share my 7 with you next week)
